Cornell University Sustainable Design (CUSD) is working to realize a bus shelter made of environmentally responsible materials. For the last three years I have been co-leading an interdisciplinary team of architects, engineers, and designers to design this shelter. I helped create smaller sub-teams focused on addressing the multiple aspects of the shelter’s design, including form, materials, bench design, electrical systems, and assembly. In addition to leading the overall design team I also worked on designing and prototyping variants of a block-like module connected with dovetail joints, as well as creating a model of a possible bus shelter form.

A series of study models exploring the joinery of the bus shelter modules concluded in the selection of a triangular module with dovetail joints (bottom row) as one of two structural systems being explored.

This model explores a singly curving bus shelter form constructed of the triangular modules. A singly curving shape was chosen to allow for easier assembly and structural calculations while still maintaining a unique and eye-catching shape for a bus shelter.
