Spatial Relations Seminar | 2024
Inspired by Nancy Holt
Deriving inspiration from Nancy Holt’s Locators series, as well as the questions her work addresses about site relationships and viewer engagement, Augmented Binoculars is an augmented reality pavilion that creates a pathway which anyone with a smartphone can walk through. Brightly colored “Locators” are dispersed throughout the pavilion and frame views towards its surroundings, giving importance to objects that would otherwise remain ignored. The experience is unique in that the pavilion is based in the internet, meaning numerous pavilions can be experienced at the same time, even though they overlap each other in simulated space. The Augmented Binoculars question notions of site specificity and the meaning of public architecture in an age where the Internet is the “third space” that people frequently inhabit.
