Artist’s Statement
My sustained investigation is an exploration of how a space can represent heritage and a person’s desire to more fully understand and embody it.
I crafted virtual reality installations that are accessible to all people and are not bound to a particular space to imply that heritage is far more than geographical bounds. The installations enable a person to peer into a space and understand its implications; heritage consists of defining a space, and my pieces involve textures with patterns and text representing the different facets of my Palestinian-Honduran heritage that are both revealed and obscured. The works invite the viewer to enter an installation and engage in not only viewing the textures but feeling the freedom of an open space. As I continued my sustained investigation I began to place my virtual reality installations in abstract, surreal environment, for though heritage is by nature grounded in a place, it is simultaneously intangible, its implications far more grand than a physical space. The works invite the viewer to understands the various facets and implications of heritage in an intimate, personal way.
