Cuarenta: The Future of Mass Transit

4th Quarter Junior Year Project | 2020

The cities most impacted by pandemics are those with robust mass transit systems. Design a product or system to alleviate the ease by which disease spread on those systems.

Cuarenta is the future of mass transit, taking into account the need for more sanitary public transit. Passengers sit facing outward, and polycarbonate dividers are placed between seats to block suspended particles carrying disease. Door apertures are widened to facilitate the quick entry and exit of passengers. Disinfectant wipe disposers glow when passengers sit down and rise from their seats, encouraging them to sanitize their hands and chairs. A futuristic yet friendly exterior serves to comfort the passengers and create a sense of security and safety.

The doors open with a sliding mechanism, which is quieter than the typical subway cart door’s mechanism.
The door apertures are wide to enable easy ingress and egress.
The diffused lighting on the cabin’s ceiling changes throughout the day to mimic the sun’s natural light, providing a more comforting commuting experience for the passengers.
Wheelchair holders secure wheelchairs in place and are located immediately in front of the center entrances for easy access.
Family sections at both ends of the cart lack partitions. All seats fold up to accomodate strollers or small wheelchairs.
