Nest: Building Unity

2020 Cooper Hewitt National High School Design Competition: Group Submission

What would you design to make more of us feel included?

Stereotypes concerning people from other cultures or abilities result from a lack of conversation and connection between those people. However, many individuals are uncomfortable interacting with those who do not look or act like them; therefore, they develop misconceptions about others and perpetrate discrimination and hate crimes against minorities.

Nest is a safe space for conversation—an enclosed bench, constructed by elementary school children with interlocking blocks for use in parks and school playgrounds. Adults securely install Nest’s base beforehand; its integrated seats fold down to accommodate wheelchairs and include “wobble cushions” for children who have trouble sitting still.

As children collaborate in building the Nest, minorities and the broader majority build cross-cultural relationships and understanding, dispelling the onset of prejudice in society. The children will return to the structure they built together, enabling more constant conversations about culture and ability, thus constructing a culture of tolerance.
